If you plan on visiting Nigeria either as a tourist or on a business trip from the UK then you will need to comply with Nigerian visa requirements.

Since 2007 visa applications have to first be made on-line to the Nigerian Consulate. If you plan to see some of the wonderful sites of this sub-Saharan country then you first have to receive an invitation. It is not clear whether invitations can be obtained via whichever travel company you are using.

You cannot enter Nigeria unless you have been inoculated against Yellow Fever. You have to have been inoculated at least three months before you are due to travel and a copy of your certificate has to accompany your visa application.

When you apply for your Nigerian visa you have to be able to show that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay and provide evidence of your travel itinerary and flight tickets. If you plan on staying in a hotel then you need to provide details of this also, you should be able to provide evidence that this is paid for.

Business Visas

There is still considerable opportunity for UK business investment in Nigeria, although you do need to thoroughly check the credentials of anyone inviting you to Nigeria on a business trip. You will need to provide a copy of your letter of invitation with your business visa application explaining the reason for your visit.

All visa applications need to be accompanied by a current passport, which has at least six months remaining before its expiration date and a passport sized photo, which should be attached to the visa application. Everyone who is travelling to Nigeria for whatever reason needs to provide details of their flight itinerary and evidence that you can support yourself whilst in Nigeria.

Religious Visits

Religious conflict is still a cause for concern in parts of Nigeria and conflicts do break out between Christians and Muslims. Christian religious visitors will need a letter from the Nigerian Church. Foreign national representatives of both Islam and Christianity require an invitation from a religious organisation and approval from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Abuja, Nigeria, must be submitted along with all the other documentation required for a visa application.

Educational

If you wish to travel to Nigeria for educational reasons as a foreign national college lecturer or university dean, then you will need to have a letter of invitation from the host college or university in Nigeria. The letter from the host institution must state the reason for your visit and these will need to be attached with all the other documentation required for Nigerian visas.

If you are a student wanting to travel to Nigeria on an exchange visit, then you will need to submit a copy of your student identification cards, and a letter of invitation from the host university. You will need to submit the letter of invitation, along with all other requisite information needed to make a Nigeria visa application.
